Jim Morrison died on July 3rd, 1971, in Paris. Of natural causes at the age of 27. Thus Jim's official epitaph is written: a history followed by film maker Oliver Stone as a prerequisite for use of Doors' music on the movie soundtrack of his 1991 film. But what really happened? Was Jim murdered as part of Operation Chaos: a CIA inspired manoeuvre to eliminate heroes of the counterculture? Or perhaps by his common-law wife Pam, who stood to inherit all of Jim's estate? Did he commit suicide as a result of depression brought about by a blazing row with Pam and the certain knowledge that his powers as a performer had waned beyond redemption? Did Jim overdose in a Paris nightclub, his body secretly transported back to his apartment and placed in the bathtub by a drug dealer's minders? Perhaps he didn’t die at all. Maybe Jim used a body double to fake his own death and is living quietly on a mountainside in Oregon? These are questions which have been bugging me for more than half a century. I've explored all the evidence which has emerged since Jim's 'death' and retraced his final footsteps in Paris. The result is this radio documentary, recorded over six months. One prospective witness in the programme died during its making, and another actual contributor died at its conclusion. This is an important piece of human and musical history. Please listen deeply. |
